Med Demo 5: Rectal Suppository for MORC Medication Training.

The first thing that we want to do when
we were passing medications during the course of our day is, we want to go over
our medications in respect to what medications we’re going to be giving, at
what time. Then we want to bring some order to that. What we want to do is
look at our medications, We’re going to put them in order by time,
who are giving our medications too. Then of course we’re going to be looking at giving medications from the easiest to the hardest medication, cleanest medication to the dirtiest medication, starting with oral medications first. You then we want to check out every
medication that we’re giving. We should always know about medications that we are
giving also what they do to the individual that’s going to be taking them. We need
to review the therapeutic effect, side effects, adverse effects, review
contraindications and related information. We’re going to check that
information against the individuals’ allergies to make sure that the
medication is safe to give. Next, we wash our work area and wash our hands, we want to make sure that our environment is organized that it’s clean then we’re
going to begin first thing we want to do is we want to
unlock our cabinet find our medication and before we take the medication out of
our storage unit we’re going to do our first check we’re going to check first
by checking the name of the individual from the pharmacy label to the Med
record we’re going to check the medications from the pharmacy label to
the Med record we’re going to look at the dose of the medication then we’ll be
checking the route and the time that we’re giving the medication
that is our first check we always check from the pharmacy label to the
medication record after we’ve done that first check we’re
going to take the medication out of the storage unit and immediately do the
second check we’re going to check first by checking the name of the individual
from the pharmacy label to the Med record we’re going to check the
medications from the pharmacy label to the Med record we’re going to look at
the dose of the medication then we’ll be checking the route and the time that
we’re giving the medication we always check from the pharmacy label
to the medication record after the second
five rights I’m going to remove one rap suppository from the box and place it on
my tray or work area at this time I’m going to do my third
check and put this box of medications away suppositories are considered a
measured dose therefore we can do our third check of the five rights before we
administer the medication to our individual we’re going to check first by
checking the name of the individual from the pharmacy label to the Med record
we’re going to check the medications from the pharmacy label to the Med
record we’re going to look at the dose of the medication then we’ll be checking
the route and the time that we’re giving the medication we always check from the pharmacy label
to the medication record I’m going to place back into the storage
unit I’m going to shut and lock that storage unit I’m going to gather up my supplies which
will include a water-soluble lubricant a medication cup tissue to clean the
lubricant before and after I place the lubricant in the medication cup and I’m
also going to need gloves and then because I don’t know who the individual
is that I am giving the medications on I want to make sure that I appropriately
identify the individual and giving medications too in this case I’m going
to go to a senior staff person someone who has a relationship with the
individual that they’ve known for a long time and I’m going to ask that
individual the staff person to assist me in helping me identify the individual
that I’m canceling the medication to once I’ve done that and I know who it is
that I’m passing the medications to I’m going to introduce myself let them know
who I am what my role is in the workplace and this also assists us in
creating a relationship with this individual while we give those
medications before I place the individual in the appropriate position I
want to let them know that I’m going to be giving them a rectal suppository
describe the procedure let them know that we’re going to do this safely that
we’re going to talk through it step-by-step and we’re going to respect
their dignity and privacy by making sure that they’re covered so that there’s no
potential possibility for embarrassment I’m going to place the individual on
their left side with their left legs straight and their right leg bent toward
their stomach I’m going to cover the exposed area with the Towler’s sheet at
this time I’m going to get all of my supplies ready you I’m going to unwrap the suppository and I’m going to place it in the Med Cup at this time I’m going to take this tube
of water-soluble lubricant I’m going to take off the top I’m going to clean
checking for any cracks breaks or contamination with the tissue making
sure not to contaminate the tip and I’m going to put a generous amount of
lubricant in the med cup with the suppository I will then clean the top of
the tube again with another tissue making sure not to touch the tip make
sure that I put my tissues in the dirty area of my tray or workspace I’m going
to place the top back on and at this time I’m going to lay the water-soluble
lubricant down and place my gloves on I’m going to put my gloves on away from
my body and above my waist you I’m going to remind the individual that
I’m now going to place the suppository in the rectal area and I’m going to talk
through the process with the individual letting know when I’m going to touch
them when they might feel pressure up against the rectal wall etc as I go
through this process at this time I’m going to lift the upper buttocks to
expose the rectal area I’m going to insert the suppository that has been
very generously lubricated with the water-soluble lubricant into the rectum
I’m going to place the suppository one inch past the sphincter muscle located
at the opening of the rectum I’m gonna lay the suppository against the rectal
wall so that it will melt and I’m going to remove my finger from the rectal area
immediately once I know that the individual is safe
in the environment I’m going to remove my gloves again making sure that all of
the waste and dirty materials that I’ve used are tucked into my first glove as I
remove it dirty – dirty glove to glove I’ll remove the second glove skin to
skin clean to clean and place all of the dirty products on my work area or train
at this time I’m going to sure the individual that I’m going to stay with
them if it happens to be an individual that may have a difficult time with this
process I may stay with him during the entire time to make sure that he doesn’t
get up off of the bed to avoid the potential possibility of the suppository
falling out or in an injury after making him comfortable I’ll excuse
myself return back to my work area I’m going to throw away all of my dirty
garbage and supplies I’m going to wash my hands I’m going to place back into the storage
unit you and I’m going to document that I gave
the medications appropriately you you
