McDonald’s: Please Hold the Antibiotics

We’re here to deliver over 150,000 petitions
to McDonald’s, calling on them to hold the antibiotics from their meat supply. Ever since they were invented, antibiotics
have been critical for saving lives. But every time we use them, and especially
when we misuse them, antibiotics become slightly less effective. Today in the United States, over 70 percent
of antibiotics sold are sold for use in animal agriculture. Most of the time they’re not even used to
treat sick animals. They’re being used as a preventative measure
because of the unsanitary and dangerous conditions on industrial farms. So we have a choice: Do we want to preserve
our health and our life-saving medicines for generations to come? Or do we want to allow large industrial farms
to continue this reckless, dangerous practice so we can have slightly cheaper meat for slightly
longer? We’re calling on large restaurants like McDonald’s
to stop purchasing any meat raised with the routine use of antibiotics. A couple years ago, in 2015, we called on
McDonald’s to stop serving chicken raised with routine antibiotics. And they responded quickly. That was a huge breakthrough, and we commend
McDonald’s for that action. This August, McDonald’s announced a global
vision for antibiotics stewardship. This would impact their entire food supply
chain over the entire world. So today, as McDonald’s executives are meeting
for their annual shareholders meeting, we’re calling on them to make that promise a reality
by making a firm time-bound commitment to stop using any meat raised with routine antibiotics. If they were to do so, it would have a huge
impact on our ability to treat infections and save lives. The Big Mac can make a big dent in stopping
the misuse of antibiotics in our food system.
