IBS Treatment – How Functional Medicine Can Help

IBS is a cluster of symptoms that
includes abdominal discomfort, frequent bowel movements, or constipation so that
is a dysregulation of the motility of the gastrointestinal tract. Causes
include food sensitivities – one of the most common causes that goes undiagnosed
is what’s called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This is where we
have reflux of bacteria from the colon inside the small intestine. One gram of
your feces has more bacteria than there are people on the planet, okay, so we have
trillions and trillions of bacteria living in our colon. Our small intestine
should be sterile so due to proton pump inhibitors which decrease the acid in
the stomach which are now available over the counter, it’s one of the most common
causes. Another common cause is a food borne illness, and that can be six months
ago, three years ago, twenty years ago and again we’re getting that reflux of
bacteria so I use a test called a hydrogen methane breath test, and doing
that we have people drink five grams of lactulose which is a non-absorbable sugar,
and then we measure their breath every twenty minutes up to three hours and
then the last hour is every thirty minutes, and by that time it should be
hitting the colon, and we should see a spike from that bacteria. If we see that
prior to then, we know that there is bacteria in the small intestine, and then
that needs to be treated. Then what do you actually do for the treatment part?
Treatment involves, if it’s SIBO for that, often in my hands its antibiotics okay.
There is a very specific antibiotic that’s indicated only for SIBO and a
problem with the liver that’s pretty rare. It also requires significant diet
modification there is a diet protocol called FODMAP – fructose, oligosaccharides,
disaccharides, monosaccharides, and phenols, and i will help somebody develop
that type of a diet plan because those are the foods that tend to feed the
bacteria. Excellent! Well I appreciate your time and we’ll look forward to
hearing from Denver again. In the meantime, we’ll see you again
