Faith in Medication – University of Leicester

While we take care many times of our bodies, not always do we take care of our souls and in order for a person to be a healthy being, a person would actually want to make sure that the synthesis between the body and the soul is a good one, in order for a person to actually live a healthy life and be productive and make the world a better place. So the implications of medication in that is if it had for instance a gelatine capsule or some alcoholic product or other type of product within the medication, someone who’s very religious would want to avoid that because they don’t eat that in their normal day-to-day life. We believe in the theory of Karma or Deeds and therefore by consuming any non-vegetarian stuff something must have been killed and we don’t like to take that sinful act with us, because for every sinful act that we do, or be part of, there is going to be a payment when that Karma or Deed comes to fruition. With that in mind one can understand why a person would very much want to make sure that their religious beliefs are taken in to consideration when it comes to medication and healing. Prescription drugs many times are not medicine one is taking in a life and death situation. Religious beliefs can play a very fundamental role in the development of our emotions and our psychological thoughts may depend largely upon what we believe, and if it is completely ignored there is a risk that the person may suffer further psychological complications. If you have an opportunity to be able get something which is, putting it in simple terms, vegetarian, lactose free and it’s just a matter of should I prescribe you A or should I prescribe you B, obviously the best option is to go for the medication that doesn’t have any questions at all what-so-ever. Sensitivity to somebodies religious beliefs will enable a person to be able to be healed so much quicker and more effectively when a person is in a positive state of mind. The doctor would ask are you allergic to this or that? Maybe we can add another question. This medication contains animal products, would you want it? That way a patient can make an informed choice.
