Breast cancer treatment planning – Mayo Clinic

In terms of creating treatment plans it
is quite complex. We recommend that, that be done often
through a multidisciplinary team with several different experts giving input
into what the treatment plan should be. Sometimes surgery is recommended first
sometimes chemotherapy is recommended first, sometimes an anti-estrogen
medication is recommended first. And then sometimes we decide that there should be radiation afterwards. Sometimes radiation is not felt to be
necessary so there really are multiple components of treatment and multiple
different sequences of treatment that may be possible. And it’s very
individualized depending on the size of a tumor, whether or not it’s in the lymph
nodes, whether it’s an invasive tumor or not an invasive tumor, what are the tumor
biology features in terms of these cell receptors. So it is very complex and what
I can say is that the treatment is very individualized. There is so much active
research going on to improve outcomes, to improve cure rates and at the same time
to lower the toxicity and the complications of the treatment for women.
