I am wondering if my child will need to take his medication for his whole life and if he does, are there any long term effects involved with that? That’s an important question that a lot of parents have, one of the first questions they often have is Is he or she going to have to be on this forever? The honest answer is we don’t know. Usually what I say is, let’s take it one year at time because the fact is seven out of ten children that have ADHD continue to have symptoms into adolescence and early adulthood. There are three out of ten where they don’t. And so sometimes the medicine is needed only for a fairly short period of time of a few months six months or a year or two and then some of the developments that go on in the brains natural course of development change the setting my change and it may not be needed later. There are others who need it from early childhood, at least through high school and couple of years beyond and there are some who will need well into adulthood depending on what they are doing.
